King Lear is also a work of great literary beauty, and that’s what I want to focus on. It is a story about pain and stupidity and the cruelty of being a human being, prone to failure. It is a lot like the Book of Job in the Bible in which the central character rails at the unfairness of life. It is a play filled with murders and hangings and a suicide and not one but two eyes being ripped out. This is a play about loyalty and disloyalty, about parents and children, about wisdom and foolishness, and about the many forms of madness - arrogance, greed, anger, ambition, dementia and pride. It vividly captures the world surgeons are in a world full of uncertainties. The title encapsulates the complexities doctors face. The title of this book, “complications”, is a pun: it both functions as the medical term “complication" and the commonly used word “complication”. Today, this book is going to show you that other side. ![]() However, people don't have the opportunity to actually get close to them: to see their eyebrows furrow when faced with complicated medical cases, or to learn about the other side of both them and medicine. People often come to surgeons as patients who want to be healed. These impressions are certainly correct, but do not reveal the whole story. Whenever people discuss these topics, the first images that appear in their minds are angels working in white robes, clinics, medicine, machines, surgeries that fight diseases, and amazing scientific breakthroughs that could extend human life. In the minds of the general public, the terms “surgeon" and “medicine” are always associated with rationality, accuracy, and order. ![]() Today we will unlock the book ‘Complications: A Surgeon’s Notes on An Imperfect Science’. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Ten-Point Program called for an immediate end to police brutality employment for African Americans and land, housing and justice for all. The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels- India Holton: This was one of those books where I hadn’t even gotten 50 pages in before I knew it was going to be a favorite. I’m excited to pick up whatever else Gornichec comes out with. It was such a beautifully written story about family, love, betrayal, and the strength of a woman. The Witch’s Heart- Genevieve Gornichec: I was a little hesitant going into this one since I’m not familiar with Norse mythology, but the writing was so accessible. This is one of the best historical fictions I’ve ever read. I don’t usually get choked up when I know that something is fake, but when I tell you this book got me good. The Nightingale- Kristin Hannah: I’m not typically an emotional reader. The character and emotional development were stunning, and I’m pretty sure this is my favorite in the series so far.
